Seeking to exploit the Internet’s potential for prying open closed societies, the Obama administration will permit technology companies to export online services like instant messaging, chat and photo sharing to Iran, Cuba and Sudan, a senior administration official said Sunday. On Monday, he said, the Treasury Department will issue a general license for the export of free personal Internet services and software geared toward the populations in all three countries, allowing Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and other providers to get around strict export restrictions.

Serious threat to the web in Italy

In 2006, students at a school in Turin, Italy filmed and then uploaded a video to Google Video that showed them bullying an autistic schoolmate. Google took it down within hours of being notified by the Italian police, and also worked with the local police to help identify the person responsible for uploading i, who was subsequently sentenced to 10 months community service by a court in Turin. But then, a public prosecutor in Milan decided to indict four Google employees. None of them had anything to do with this video. They did not appear in it, film it, upload it or review it. None of them know the people involved or were even aware of the video's existence until after it was removed. Nevertheless, a judge in Milan today convicted 3 of the 4 defendants.

Wikileaks is a global platform for Whistleblowers, in which internal documents can be published. The idea is that arcane knowledge becomes common knowledge and the world a better place. The project could play in the same league as success stories like Wikipedia or Indymedia. Interview of Julian Assange, the most prominent Wikileaks-character on how to finance such a website. The question seems to be pressing.

Recently it has come to my attention that long-time warez serial site serialz.to has simply vanished from the internet, but this is not what makes it worthy of my time writing and submitting this journal entry. The fact of the matter is that by vanish, i mean literaally, with no trace, no google caches of the page, no news articles, no forum posts. The closest thing I can find to even provide evidence it existed at all is an alexa traffic profile.
